AN elderly man is in hospital suffering from the effects of breathing in smoke ater a fire ripped through his home in Laleham on Tuesday night (February 21).

A fleet of fire engines, an ambulance and police officers attended Monks Way at around 9pm after a neighbour reported smoke pouring from the upstairs window of the property.

The occupant, a man in his 80s named as Ian Arthur, was taken to St Peter’s Hospital in Chertsey.

Crews from Staines, Sunbury and Egham fire stations were at the scene until around 1am, and the blaze caused extensive damage to the home.

THE Ballarat Football League has applied to take over administration of a metropolitan football competition.

Ballarat league chief executive Rod Ward confirmed his organisation was in the running to add the Riddell District Football League its administration hub.

The Ballarat league already administrates the Maryborough and Castlemaine District Football League and also ran the Lexton Plains Football League before it was disbanded at the end of 2010.

The Riddell District league includes Woodend-Hesket, Rockbank, Broadford, Sunbury Kangaroos, Kilmore, Wallan, Melton Central, Lancefield, Romsey, Riddell, Macedon and Diggers Rest in its senior football competition.

While many of these clubs are located in country towns, the league is not part of the Victorian Country Football League and is instead overseen by AFL Victoria.

The competition’s general manager and operations manager resigned from their roles earlier this month, creating the administration vacancy.

The Ballarat league’s proposal is currently with the Riddell league’s club presidents, who have until next week to provide feedback.

Ward said an operations manager would be installed in the Riddell league’s offices in Sunbury if the Ballarat league’s proposal was given the green light.

An AFL Victoria review of football in the Riddell region is also slated to take place this year.

Time to break the illusion, target middle class tourists

            2/22/2012

Re: “Tourism’s high end market good area to place focus” on Page 4 of the February 14, 2012 Barbados Advocate.

Many of the leadership in Barbados, like Deputy Governor of the Central Bank, Harold Codrington, are under the illusion that Barbados is known for luxury accommodation. However, a search on TripAdvisor.com shows Barbados rates no better than four and a half out of five stars. By comparison, a bottom end mass tourism market like the Dominican Republic has over a half dozen five-star hotels. There is a belief among the leadership that the luxury market here will attract high net worth tourists who will spend a lot.

But the truth is, this kind of tourist spends most of his or her time within the luxury resort or spa only leaving on occasion for a round of golf, a polo match, a visit to the new Limegrove Centre, or for a change in restaurant. By contrast, it is the middle class tourist who gets out and visits the Cheapside or Brighton markets, Sunbury or St. Nicholas Abbey, Gun Hill or the Barbados Wildlife Reserve as examples. In so doing, they rent cars, buy petrol, take taxis, shop for groceries, shop for souvenirs, visit local bars and restaurants, and therefore spend and put money into the local economy.

The same is true of the cruise ship market. A wealthy few arrive in their yachts while the middle class exit their cruise ship in large numbers and do their
touring and spending.

The political and business leadership are also under the illusion Barbados has high quality infrastructure. There are individual resorts or businesses that do, but visit any public beach and you will find tired, ageing facilities with some toilets or showers that are not working, and picnic benches that need repair or replacement. The coastal roads are potholed, narrow, with open ditches in places. I scarcely dare mention the giant pothole at the parking lot entrance to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. So the completion of the Four Seasons Resort or Beachlands will not only increase traffic congestion and tie-ups on an already inadequate road infrastructure, but will also push property prices further beyond the reach of ordinary Bajans.

Everywhere I see the same lack of upgrading and maintenance to building infrastructure. The Hotel Caribbee and the Empire Theatre are falling into decay, and are only two of myriad examples. Take something as simple as the labelling of plants and trees in the botanical gardens or forests like Welchman Hall, Grenade Forest or Andromeda. As plants or tress have died and been replaced, the labels are not changed to reflect the changed plantings.

The root of it all is not just a lack of money, but a lack of caring by too many people. How else can you explain roadside litter not picked up, fishing in so-called protected marine areas, or a mangrove swamp without access to the ocean.

There is too much of a ‘Union’ attitude here in Barbados where the only concern is better wages or working conditions, but not how to be more efficient and to achieve more with fewer resources so that the company can thrive and grow and ultimately provide more real jobs for Barbadians, and not the underemployment so evident now.

Barbados is known for civil servants who are slow to process paperwork, and business contractors who are slow to complete projects. So slowness and inefficiency are found at all levels of society.

In regard to business and political leaders, it sometimes seems that the purpose of meetings at the various hotels is to enjoy a good meal – as a business expense for businessmen and at taxpayer expense for politicians – rather than to make decisions and take action. In the words of a Country and Western song, Barbados needs “a little less talk, and a lot more action”.

To conclude, pursuit of the high end market is a dead end for Barbados in my opinion. With the economic success of Brazil and Mexico in recent years in the Americas, and the huge expansion of the middle class in China and India, it is easy to see that is where the focus should be placed. And a whole new vision is needed for Barbados if this demographic is to be attracted.

I realise that as a tourist who has visited Barbados in the past nine winters, my comments may seem too critical. But it is because I love Barbados and its people that I hope my comments will be seen as a call for improvement. For Barbados is not a paradise, or even a potential paradise, but simply a paradise lost if Barbadians don’t wake up.

The Daily Item

SUNBURY — One day before police said two men were involved in a stabbing that left two people in need of medical attention, including a woman who was nine months’ pregnant, the two defendants allegedly were involved in an assault and robbery outside a city bar that left a Sunbury resident without his pants and shoes.

City police Tuesday charged Christopher Atanasio, 28, and Nelson Navarro, 31, both of Sunbury, in a Dec. 27 assault on Jedediah Ross and Matt Hare, of Sunbury, outside Laughter’s Bar, in the 100 block of South Third Street.

Police said Atanasio and Navarro waited outside the bar for Ross to exit, and when he reached the nearby railroad tracks, he was punched by one of the men and knocked to the ground.

Ross told police that once he was on the ground, he continued to get kicked and punched until he was ordered to take his pants and shoes off, court documents said. He then was ordered to give the men his wallet and anything else he had in his pockets and to lay on his stomach and not look up.

Ross told police the attack occurred behind a metal utility box, and he later was taken to Sunbury Community Hospital for treatment by his mother, documents said.

Police said they found shoes, a cell phone and keys at the crime scene. Ross told them the shoes were Hare’s and that Hare also was robbed but went home afterward, according to documents.

When interviewed at the police station several hours later, Ross and Hare said they had a run-in with two men while drinking in Laughter’s Bar but the incident was resolved, documents said. The assaults occurred about an hour after the men left the bar.

Neither Ross nor Hare knew the names of the alleged attackers, but gave police a description that matched video surveillance footage of the incident inside the bar, documents said. Police said they identified Atanasio and Navarro as the suspects.

Navarro was arrested the next day, on Dec. 28, at 544 Susquehanna Ave. after being caught inside an apartment. The pregnant woman had called police to report that she had been stabbed. Days later, Atanasio was picked up by police as the second suspect in that incident.

Both men were charged Tuesday with robbery, criminal conspiracy to commit robbery, simple assault, theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property and harassment and arraigned in front of District Judge Ben Apfelbaum.

Navarro, who had been out on bail, was committed to the Northumberland County Prison in lieu of $75,000 bail. Atanasio was returned to the prison in lieu of $75,000 bail. Both will appear in court on March 1 for preliminary hearings.

Europe Solar Utility (ESU) has announced the sale of one of the last solar PV installations to be completed under the UK’s previous feed-in tariff, to an undisclosed investor. The three installations, which total 3.7MW, have been built on land owned by water regulator Thames Water. The area is equivalent to ten football pitches and will generate up to 3,500MWh – enough to run around 750 homes, saving Thames Water around £100,000 a year.

Construction of the projects was financed and managed by ESU, successfully completing the first phase of the project before the August 1, 2011, deadline qualifying it for the higher feed-in-tariff rate of £0.307kWh. The installation will provide 0.5% of its 1,180GWh – £80m annual energy requirement – for processing and transporting 2.6 billion litres of water a day and more than 4 billion litres of sewage a day – in addition to the 16% already generated from burning biomethane gas derived from sewage sludge using anaerobic digestion.

ESU will be involved in the on-going management of the installations to ensure optimal performance.

“We delivered this project in the nick of time, keeping alive our goal to become Britain’s biggest on-site producer and industrial user of solar power, and further hedging ourselves from future upward fluctuations in the mainstream, non-renewable energy markets,” said John Gilbert, Thames Water’s head of carbon and energy management.

Patrick Charignon, CEO of Europe Solar Utility, said: “Future projects of this scale have been put in doubt by the UK Government’s proposed cut to the feed-in-tariff rate. However, utilities may still gain the benefits of solar PV through installations built around power purchase agreements of the type used in this project that offer long-term price certainty in environment of rising energy prices.”

Under the 25-year contract, Ennoviga Solar Ltd has created an investment company that will own and maintain the solar arrays, repaying the investment by selling all the clean electricity produced to the water company at a market-competitive price.

Stefano Gambro, director at Ennoviga, said: “By working with us, Thames Water has led the industry in exploiting otherwise unusable space to generate clean electricity. When energy prices rise and carbon charging starts, the impact on Thames Water customers’ bills will now be that little bit less.”

The locations of the Thames Water’s solar arrays include: 450kW, generating 385MWh a year on average, on the roof of the Beckton desalination plant in Newham; 1,500kW, yielding on average 1,400MWh a year, on the top of vast storm tanks built in the 1800s at Crossness sewage works in Bexley and 1,790kW, producing 1,550MWh a year on average, on redundant sand filters at Walton water treatment works in Sunbury.

A BODY found in a Sunbury stretch of the Thames at the weekend is thought to be that of a man in his 40s from the local area.

Residents living near Sunbury Court Island expressed their horror after firefighters pulled the body out of the river at around 5pm on Saturday (February 18).

The man, who police said was white, slim and aged in his late 40s, is yet to be formally identified.

He was found in the water wearing a black waterproof jacket and tortoise shell glasses.

The discovery was made by a canoeist close to homes on the island opposite Lower Hampton Road.

Anyone who witnessed any suspicious or unusual activity on the River Thames between Chertsey and Sunbury on Saturday is asked to call Surrey Police on 101, quoting reference SL/12/1073, or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

WHAT DO YOU THINK? SCROLL TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS STORY TO POST A COMMENT.

A THIRD rail crossing in Sunbury is back on the agenda.

At the Hume Council meeting last week, Cr Jack Ogilvie said money had been put aside for a number of years for the crossing, which would provide alternative access to Jacksons Hill.

He called on council officers to present a report on why the proposal hadn’t gone ahead.

He said any hurdles should be resolved or the authorities should build the crossing elsewhere.

Sunbury Residents Association president Bernie O’Farrell said the council should take steps to make the crossing into Jacksons Hill a reality.

The council and Places Victoria, the Jacksons Hill estate developer, had signed an agreement for a third crossing once 750 homes were built at the estate.

Original plans require a link to be built connecting the estate to Vineyard Road through the existing rail viaduct.

“The council has done nothing and it’s their responsibility to make things happen and seek the resources,” Mr O’Farrell said.

“There needs to be alternative access to Jacksons Hill.

“Once the [rail] electrification [project is complete], traffic will be banked up and if there’s an accident there will be gridlock.”

He said it was time the council and Places Victoria (previously known as VicUrban) followed through on their agreement and created a third crossing.

A council spokesman said options for the crossing at Jacksons Hill were still being investigated.

“We are still in detailed discussions with VicUrban and will present a progress report to council in the coming months.”

Places Victoria chief development officer Dominic Arcaro

said the final approvals for the viaduct construction had not yet been given as there were still a number of issues to be sorted.

The williamhill.com Adonis Juvenile Hurdle at Kempton on Saturday looks like providing plenty of Triumph Hurdle clues.

Alan King’s Grumeti, the Philip Hobbs-trained Sadler’s Risk, Paul Nicholls’ Dildar and Lyvius, trained by Nicky Henderson, are prominent in the ante-post betting for the Cheltenham event and could line up at the Sunbury circuit.

The last two winners of the Triumph Hurdle, Soldatino and Zarkandar, both used this race, which has attracted 13 entries at the five-day confirmation stage, as a stepping-stone to glory.

With subsequent champion hurdlers Binocular and Punjabi, as well as Well Chief and Kasbah Bliss, on the roll of honour, it takes a smart horse to win it.

Baby Mix and Dark And Dangerous, as well as Henderson’s Une Artiste, have also shown winning form.

Nicholls has entered Dodging Bullets, trained on the Flat in Ireland and bred by Frankie Dettori.

SUNBURY — Fighting through controversy and a public hearing to clear his name, a Shikellamy volunteer Ivy League wrestling coach and 2012 District 4 Hall of Fame inductee led his team to the North Division championship on Sunday.

Former Shikellamy High wrestling standout Bob Supsic coached his team of youth wrestlers to first place in their division, capturing the Coal Cracker Wrestling League on Sunday at a team tournament in Schuylkill Haven.

Supsic coaches the Shikellamy Ivy League children between the ages of 6 and 12.

In November, Supsic came under fire as he was suspended for allegedly manhandling a student wrestler during a practice at the high school.

Supsic didn’t sit still as he demanded a public hearing to fight to clear his name of any wrongdoing. The five-hour hearing played into the school board voting on Supsic’s fate.

Supsic was found not guilty by a 5-3 vote and returned to the mat room.

Supsic spoke with a hoarse voice and fought back tears.

“After what I went through this year it is an unbelievable feeling,” Supsic said Monday.

“Moreso what the kids went through is what makes this the best feeling in the world.”

Shikellamy outlasted 14 other schools en route to winning the championship and finishing with a record of 9-2.

“(Sunday) was the best day this team has seen,” he said.

“I give those kids all the credit in the world and they wrestled fantastic.”

Supsic said he wanted to thank parents, community members and his coaches.

“The amount of time parents put in by traveling, helping out and just donating their time is truly amazing,” Supsic said. “My coaching staff held this ship together and weathered the storms and I can’t thank them enough.”

Assistant coach Chris Burgess said he couldn’t even speak because of the emotional roller coaster the team has been on.

“This was challenging, stressful, but all worth it because these kids were amazing,” Burgess said Monday.

“We are doing this for them and after going through the hearing and everything else to see their faces on Sunday makes it all worth it. I would do it all over again.”

Burgess said he respects Supsic and what he has accomplished.

“I’m proud of Bob because he could have thrown his hands in the air and walked away, but he didn’t,” Burgess said.

“He showed good character and he stuck around because of the kids, and that is commendable.”

Cade Balestrini, 11, said he was thrilled to be part of the team.

“We started off slow, but I think we pulled through and we did much better,” he said.

“Coach Bob is one of my favorite people. He is nice and he taught us everything we needed to know.”

Supsic said a pizza party and something special will be planned for the wrestlers in the weeks to come.

SUNBURY — It’s Presidents Day and with a short week ahead, let’s get right down to it before you get “licked.”

This week there are a few important meetings, an interesting play, a visit from a U.S. Congressman and a few celebrities visiting the Valley.

1. On Tuesday Republican U.S. Rep. Tom Marino will visit Middleburg and tour Northway Industries.

Northway has been in business for more than 40 years and provides contract manufacturing services to the wood related industry. Northway employees more than 100 employees and Marino is set to visit and shake hands and tour the 93,000 square-foot factory.

2. On Thursday the Shikellamy school board will meet to discuss several issues, but the one that may be on the minds of those in attendance is who is going to run the district for the next 30 days.

District superintendent Robin Musto has taken a leave absence for the time being and the board will have to make a decision on who will call the shots.

Board members have said that district business manager Dave Sinopoli may be the choice.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m.

3. Thursday will also be a big day for Northumberland Borough residents as they face a stray cat problem.

Several residents have complained about the alley cats becoming a nuisance and council members must decide what sort of ordinance they will put in place.

Other residents don’t want to hear the proposed catch and euthanize method the borough suggested so tensions may be brewing inside the borough building starting at 7 p.m.

4. The Weis Center at Bucknell University will present the Walnut Street Theatre’s production of “Proof” by David Auburn on Friday.

“Proof,” is the story of a young woman who didn’t go to college because she had to take care of her father.

He was brilliant, yet mentally ill. Go figure.

The university always puts on a good show and that begins at 8 p.m.

5. If the play isn’t up to your standards, then take a ride to Shamokin Area High School where the stars of the hit television show, “Lizard Lick Towing Recovery,” will be presenting “Lizard Lick In The House” with Ron and Amy Shirley from the network TruTV.

20 February 2012

Waste management company SITA UK has opened a new facility to bulk up
paper, cardboard, cans, glass and plastic bottles collected from
residents in Hounslow, London for recycling.

The company said that refuse collection vehicles serving the borough will also
be housed at the new depot, located on the Hanworth Industrial Estate
in Sunbury, rather than travelling outside of London.

Up to 17,000 tonnes of dry-recyclables such as paper, cardboard,
plastics and glass collected from local households will be bulked up at
the £500,000 facility beforebeing moved on to recycling facilities for
processing as part of a seven year waste and recycling contract with Hounslow Borough Council,.

According to the company the new facility will help it make carbon
savings of up to 75kg of CO2 per day – the equivalent of travelling
from Hounslow to Lands End in a small car.

In addition to opening of the depot, SITA said that it has also
invested in new technology on board the collection vehicles, which
monitors the routes drivers are taking along with their environmental
performance to allow for more CO2 savings.

Steve Holgate, general manager at SITA UK, explained: “By re-locating
our bulking station and vehicle depot to Sunbury we are able to make
considerable environmental savings, which as one of the greenest
businesses in the UK is of major importance to us.”

Cllr Corinna Smart, Hounslow Council’s cabinet member for environment
added: “We are keen to work with partners such as SITA UK to reduce
waste and emissions in our borough. Initiatives such as this help us to
create a more environmentally friendly Hounslow and make recycling
easier than ever before.”

THOUSANDS of containers filled with logbooks and trinkets are carefully hidden around the state – and there could be one near you.

The buried treasure is part of a secretive, hi-tech game of hide and seek called geocaching.

It’s a navigational game where players use hand-held GPS devices or iPhones to find containers known as caches or geocaches.

The aim is to find the geocache and sign the logbook inside.

About 11,000 geocaches are hidden in Victoria, including hundreds around Melton, Moorabool, Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges.

Geocaches can be heavily disguised – some look like logs or rocks – and as a small as a fingernail.

Larger geocaches often contain small toys that players can swap by exchanging an item of their own.

Once a geocache is located and logged, players record their finds on the internet.

The sport, which came to Australia in 2000, is quickly gaining popularity.

Peter Taurins, a geocacher for eight years and part-operator of the Geocaching Australia website, said a GPS could pin-point geocaches to within a 10m radius, but the final find was up to individual players.

The Burnside resident said pseudonyms were used when logging finds online, adding to the illusiveness of the game.

“(Using a pseudonym) is just one of those secret society things,” he said.

“In Australia there are relatively few of us playing the game, so we don’t tend to broadcast who we are or what we do.”

There are about 1300 players in Victoria with more than 55,000 geocaches waiting to be found Australia-wide.

“The urban area around Melbourne is quite dense with them,” Mr Taurins said.

“As you get further out into the bush, they tend to be rarer.

“But generally you tend to find larger ones in the bush – they’re fun to get to because they take you to places you’ve never been before.”

Mr Taurins said geocaching was a great way to see the country.

“You get to see places that you simply would never have visited because there is a geocache hidden there,” he said.

“You also have the challenge of finding them and not getting spotted.

“We do this because we don’t want the geocache to go missing after we’ve found it – we need to be quite discreet.”

NORTHUMBERLAND — There is no doubt that Northumberland has a stray cats problem, but killing felines that are trapped won’t help, a resident said.

The Borough Council’s rules committee met last Monday night to discuss how to deal with the problem, said councilman and committee Chairman Ty Sees.

Linda Williard, who lives in the borough, said she is associated with several animal groups such as SUN PETS, the Mostly Mutts no-kill shelter near Sunbury and the Lycoming Animal Protection Society, or LAPS, a no-kill cat shelter in South Williamsport, and she is concerned about what action might be taken at this week’s council meeting. The council had been set to meet Tuesday, but the meeting has been rescheduled for Thursday.

“They can’t trap them and kill them,” she said. ‘We understand Northumberland has a problem, but so do other areas, and they have many meetings to figure out the best method of trying to solve it.”

Williard said the council talked about trapping the animals and keeping them for three days for owners to retrieve. After the three-day period, the council would euthanize animals that weren’t claimed.

“That won’t solve the problem,” she said. “Trapping them and neutering them and then releasing them is a better idea.”

Williard said some residents finance trap, neuter and release programs out of their own pockets.

“The average life of a stray cat who has been neutered and released on the streets is only two years,” she said. “They will die on their own.”

Sees said residents have trapped up to 60 cats, and some take them to Harrisburg to get neutered and then bring the animals back and release them.

He said he disagrees with that method. Sees said resident complaints about cats getting in garbage and gardens would just continue after the animals’ return.

“They are cats,” Williard said. “Of course, that is where they will go. They aren’t like dogs, and when they go to the bathroom, they bury it.”

The ordinance being discussed also might include the licensing of cats, which would help owners find lost pets.

Sees said the borough is seeing the stray cats problem as a health and safety issue.

“When cats run wild in backyards, in flower beds, they can carry diseases, they defecate. It can pose a real danger to the health of young children,” he said.

Borough secretary Jan Bowman said the rules committee considered an animal ordinance in 2009, but failed to reach a consensus. The borough does not have an animal control officer, so the problem would fall to the Northumberland Police Department.

Williard said she spoke with police Chief Tim Fink about the situation. “I just asked him to look at other options,” she said. “I hope this can be solved in the appropriate way.”

According to a Maryland group called Alley Cat Allies, the best ways to keep stray cats off property are to apply nontoxic deterrents around the yard, put a tight lid on trash cans, block gaps in the foundations of sheds and use a car cover.

The group said catching and killing cats brings in more cats because new cats see the territory as vacant. It also suggests the trap, neuter and release method.
